I've already received three horrible pieces of news in the first eleven days of 2012 to know that this year is going to be a challenging one. It's going to be one that sees me tightening my pursestrings, exercising a lot of caution, and working even harder. And since this list was such a hit last year, I thought I'd do another this year. Appreciate the People in Your Life
Whether it's your mother, your BFF or your boyfriend, we usually don't tell the people we love how much we love them. Whether it's the thought of being an overly clingy girlfriend that's stopping you from smothering your boyfriend with kisses or just your ego getting in the way - GET OVER IT. Tell the people you love that you love them ALL THE TIME or if you can't stomach that - little gestures will help too. Compliment your mom's new hairdo, buy your gay BFF his favourite flowers or give your favourite girl a brownie just because you thought she deserved it for being awesome. Little things, baby, it's the little things.
I know people who barely have enough clothes to fill a wardrobe. And on the other side of the spectrum, I know people with enough clothes that could fill several wardrobes. I am the latter. Which is why from today, I'm tightening my pursestrings and not buying anymore clothes, underwear, accessories, bags or shoes. Enough, Faz. It's time to start saving - big things are coming, and you need money for that.
Maybe I can shop after I have my garage sale with Andrea. Watch this space - we're having a two-day garage sale close to Farrer Road MRT Station!
You know why Borders, and now Page One are all closing? Because people don't read enough. Kids spend time fiddling with Angry Birds and whathaveyous and miss out on one of the most amazing experiences in life - reading.
Set Enormous Goals
Apparently the world is supposed to end this year. Bullshit, I say. Make hugeass goals that make your heart stop and your palms sweat. Mine is to pay up my debts, and save enough money to move to another country.
Save Your Skin
My friend passed away a few days ago from skin cancer. While prolonged exposure to the sun is not the only cause of skin cancer, it's time to save your skin. Take another minute or two every morning to slather sunscreen on yourself, or choose to use a tinted moisturiser with SPF properties in your skin care regiment. It will seem a hassle sometimes, but if it's eventually gonna save your life, why the hell not.
Do you know that drinking 16oz (or about 448ml) of water right after you wake up will speed up your metabolism by 24% for the next ninety minutes? I'm a water baby, so I love anything that has to do with water - drinking water, frolicking in water, making out in water, water sports! Easy peasy resolution, doncha think?
Support Other Women
Women can be so vicious to one another, and it needs to stop. All these bitching, talking-behing-backs, childish high school behaviour needs to be left behind. GROW THE FUCK UP. We go through a hellish five - seven day every month, we talk to our girlfriends about the same things, we emerge out of the Zara sale feeling like warriors out of the movie 300, we say the same shit enough times boys can make a video about it and we can relate! So embrace your girlfriend, and give her friendly advice if she's wearing a dress that looks like a doily instead of sniggering about it.
In the words of Beyonce... "Who run the world?! Girls!"
If you say you'll do something, do it. Don't say "let's do coffee" and never do it. Say only what you mean. If someone who never hang out with asks if you'd like to hang out, go - you'll never know what you get out of it. And if you don't, hey, at least you know better. Or if you don't want to hang out, say you don't want to. Say it as it is, don't bullshit or beat around the bush. Saves for trouble and hassle that will come later.
Dress for You
Stop copying someone else's style because you like it. Stop dressing like a skank/ hoe/ slut because you think it'll attract someone you like. Dress for you - confidence comes from being comfortable and if you're not comfortable wearing 6" heels and harnesses around your body... trust me, even Photoshop can't save that tragedy. Remember that not all silhouettes suit all people. Not everything in style will suit you or your lifestyle. Be You!
Take Care of Yourself
Being a hypochondriac, I schedule regular checkups with various specialists to make sure I'm in good form [that doesn't stop me from fracturing a toe, though]. Get a mammogram, a pap smear, get your blood tested, get all the vaccinations necessary. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Teach Children the Right Things
Whether you have kids of your own, or you have nephews or nieces, or even children you encounter whilst in transit: talk to them about the right things. Instead of complimenting them on a pretty dress, ask about the book they're reading. What's wrong with a compliment? When you live in a world where nearly half of all three- to six-year-old girls worry about being fat, 15 to 18 percent of girls under 12 now wear mascara, eyeliner and lipstick regularly; eating disorders are up and self-esteem is down; and 25 percent of young American women would rather win America's Next Top Model than the Nobel Peace Prize, you need to teach kids that there are better things to think about than their appearances.
Last year I told you to fall in love. This year, I'm telling you to love. Love yourself, your body, the people around you, the fact that you have a roof over your head, the fact that you can afford to eat out, or buy new clothes, own a car, watch movies. Had you been born just outside of where you are right now, you'd be living a different a different life altogether. Set your goals high, but love what you already have.
